Why Content is King in SEO

In the olden days of search engine optimization, it was like the Wild West. You keyword-stuffed, you fiddled with code, you put white text on white copy at the bottom of the page to draw and audience, all in the name of SEO.

But the whole point of SEO is not a con; it's not a game -- it's to optimize your searches for the best results possible. And finally, Google is understanding that. For 2009, Google has revamped how it calculates SEO. And if you're still stuck back in keyword stuffing while you've ignored your content, say "Sayonara" to your rankings.

So what's different?

Organic click-thru rate. The more people who see your page and actually click on it will matter more because it's telling Google that you're relevant and have valuable information. What do you think is going to draw someone and keep them there? A ton of random keywords, or a collection of valid, concise and engaging content (articles, video, polls, quizzes, etc) that they would actuallybe interested in?

Time on site. The longer people spend on your site after the search, the higher your ranking. Is white on white copy going to keep them there? No - but an awesome video, an interesting podcast, a relevant blog entry (i.e., content) is.

Social responses. Are people linking to your site via Twitter, Digg, their own blog, etc? Those results show up in the rankings and help your site because they link back to you.  Interesting content is the only way to achieve these kind of grassroots results.

Content is king for SEO now more than ever. However, it's a particular content that will really make your web site succeed. If you have a video, do you have a good title, description, keywords, and tags? Are you linking back to it through other mediums? Have your articles been edited, proofed, fact-checked and optimized through their meta-data, keywords, title, descriptions, and subheads? It's a lot to think about!
And writing content for the web is very different from writing for a book. You need premium content that's tight, interesting and engaging to draw and keep your audience. But, once you have a proper system in place, you're building up a library of content that is unique and yours alone. It's a long-term resource for your web site, and it tells your customers that you are trustworthy since you're actually providing them with useful information that they can take with them.
