You blog every day, but it continually receives less than a dozen hits. You check on your Facebook every day, but your wall is empty. Your tweet constantly, but your Twitter follower count remains stagnant. What's the issue?
Assuming you have engaging content, your issue might be that you aren't being social enough. But wait, you protest -- you're on all of these social networks each and every day. How could you possibly be more social? The issue is that you need to be interactive. Being on all of these social networks is just throwing content out there.
You're talking at people when you need to be talking to them.
Instead of just posting on your own blog, subscribe to blogs that interest you. Follow them or subscribe to their RSS feeds, and comment on an entry when something interests you. Instead of just logging onto Facebook and checking your wall, comment on other members' posts. "Like" something that you actually like. Comment on a post that you find relevant. The same thing goes for Twitter. Are you just throwing tweets out left and right, or are you conversing with people? If you haven't retweeted or used the @ reply lately, you need to start rethinking your strategy.
Think of it this way -- no one likes the braggart at the party who monopolizes the conversation and does nothing but talk about himself. The same goes for social media: join the party, and share the social media.
