I definitely think that for certain users, this feature holds a lot of promise. As you said, clubs, teams, and other organizations can easily create a group to share updates, messages, and other information with all their members. It might not work for a big group of friends, but I would consider using this feature for a smaller group of friends, like my old roommates from college. We don't all live in the same city anymore, and we try to all keep in contact as much as possible usually via e-mail. This would be a great way to share recent updates and news with each other.

I totally agree with this. Twitter is my breaking news source - even if I don't mean it to be. I don't follow CNNBrk or any of those breaking news accounts, but important info just gets passed along so quickly that I'm often the first to know things in my workplace, for example.

I saw it. I liked t. Great writing; great story. Did not realize Sean Parker weaseled himself into the company and got 7% equity! Wow! I thoguht they made each charater sympathetic and plausable. IP is a trciky, tricky thing. As Zuckerberg stated, " if they invented facebook, they would have invented facebook". Somehow, each settlement allowed both sides to "win". Lots of money all around.

I, too, am pretty resistant to trying new social media outlets. To me, I know I only want to spend a certain amount of time each day on social media activity, so I try to limit myself -- the more outlets I try, the more likely that I'll get sucked into them. So I'm more than okay sticking to my tried-and-true favorites. However, as the blog points out, I think it's hugely dependent on your purpose. If you're on the cutting edge of the latest services and technologies, I see why it'd be worthwhile to try out all the variations on each social media theme. For me, though, there's no need -- for instance, I know I don't want to be on a geolocation service if none of my friends are, so I'll wait till I hear lots about it and then try it. This may make me stubborn, and it may cause me to be out-of-the-loop at times, but it keeps me from becoming overwhelmed by the constantly changing and advancing technology.

This is really interesting because I know I tend to fall into habits of favorites and am very resistant to try other things. I like Tweetdeck: it works for me, and it has the largest market share, so I must be on to something - why would I try HootSuite, or others? But all of these technologies are changing so much, even in just seemingly minor features that can make a big difference - I guess I'll have to remind myself to revisit other technologies more often!

Both in the case of Old Spice and Tipp's, it's an advertising campaign, just like any other. Of course, in these cases they are both silly ones, but silly can sell (think of GEICO's cavemen). It's another way to get word about their product out.

I found this article facinating. With all the P.R. surrounding social media one would think that profitability would follow. Guess not. I'm surprised that LinkedIn is not more profitable as it does attract high level professionals, often those able to make financial decisions for their companies. I guess the diversity of the professionals makes focused advertizing difficult to sell.

I like that my foursquare only has a few people that I can inform and I wouldn't need to inform all of my friends, friends that they we are doing this or are located here. that would be their choice. I think that this sounds like a great resource for students, particularly incoming freshmen. Since most students are on Facebook anyway, this is an easy way for students to find out things happening on campus and to get involved and meet new people.

I love and use Foursquare all the time but will probably be opting-out of Facebook Places. I read a great article last week that talked about how you can be tagged by people when you're out with them, and maybe you didn't want someone else to know you were there - you don't have control over that.

You raise an interesting point that we've touched upon before in the comments section of this blog and actually plan to address later this week - the safety of geo-location services.

In the meantime, you can opt-out of Facebook Places, which is particularly useful considering people can tag you without your consent (unless you opt-out). Check back tomorrow for on this!

I just read an article about how people have been burglarized because their friends and friends of friends on Facebook were aware that they were out of town. It will be interesting to see what privacy issues "Places" will raise. Can users opt out of this feature on Facebook?
